High performance telephoto zoom lens
With a focal length range of 70-300mm, the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM is a compact and versatile telephoto zoom lens delivering exceptional image quality. Ideal for wildlife and sports photographers, as well as photo journalism and portraiture.

L-series quality
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are highly resistant to dust and moisture.

4-stop Image Stabilizer
A 4-stop optical Image Stabilizer – specially designed for the lens’ specific focal length range – works to counteract image blur, which can occur during handheld shooting, or at slow shutter speeds. Automatic panning detection ensures effective performance when tracking moving subjects and, as the IS system is based in the lens, results are visible through the viewfinder during framing.

Two UD elements
Chromatic aberration is virtually eliminated by the inclusion of two UD lenses, ensuring optimum image quality and sharpness.

Creative background blur
An 8 blade circular aperture on the EF 70-300mm f4-5.6L IS USM creates beautiful background blur, making your subject stand out with dramatic effect.

Fast, quiet auto focus
A ring USM (Ultrasonic motor) uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive extremely rapid auto focus with near-silent operation. A high-speed CPU and optimised AF algorithms contribute further to AF speed. Good holding torque stops the focusing lens group without overshoot. Full time electronic manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF mode.

Reviews

The Lens was previously tested with a cropped camera (EOS 650D) and now with a full frame EOS 5D Mark II Dslr body:

"The Canon 70-300 mm L is, given its optical performance and solid finish, an attractively priced compact telephoto zoom lens. The higher vignetting and distortion that you get, when using this lens, makes the total score of the Canon 70-300 mm L review half a point lower than the final score of our Canon 70-300 mm L review on a Canon 650D. Those who shoot in RAW can easily remove this difference by using the standard lens correction profiles in Canon's DPP software, Lightroom or Photoshop. In short, this is a lens to use with pleasure for years.

Of all the 70-300mm lenses in existense, this is the most expensive one. Is it worth the (hefty) premium?:

"Typical of Canon's L series lenses, this lens feels incredibly well-built and the tough white exterior finishes off the look. Sealing against dust and moisture has been applied to the lens, including a rubber gasket around the metal lens mount to

The lens is tested with EOS 5D Mark II and 1D mark IV dslr bodies:

"I came into this review worried I wouldn’t be able to make enough good images with it since I had the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II with me. Thankfully I was wrong! For the purpose of outdoor everyday photography, including  a safari, this is a fabulous lens. With the current landscape of lens pricing, I don’t think it’s overpriced. It’ll start dropping in price over the next few months. It’ll also be a lens that’ll show up in rebate programs.
This probably isn’t a lens for weddings, portraits, lowlight or indoor sports (unless it’s well lit or strobed) unless you have no other option. It will be a great lens for outdoor work, safaris, outdoor sports, zoos, kids and general travel shooting.

"The Canon 70-300mm ƒ/4-5.6L provides its best results for sharpness in the 100-135mm range, stopped down slightly. Issues noted above 200mm, particularly on full-frame cameras, suggest our sample could be slightly de-centered.

When mounted on the sub-frame 7D, the lens provides decent sharpness wide open at 70mm and ƒ/4; stopping down to ƒ/5.6 shows some

"The Ultra Sonic Motor was first introduced to the Canon range in the 300mm f/2.8L in 1987. Incorporating two rings, the system uses energy from ultrasonic oscillation to drive the rings. They're ultra fast, audible only to dogs or bats and are extremely fuel efficient. The end result for the user means a faster, quieter motor with less hunting for the focus point.

"Also following the lead of the EF 70-200mm f/4 L lenses is the inclusion of a soft lens case (the Canon LP1424 shown above) instead of the nicer padded and zippered cases the rest of the similarly-sized and similarly-priced white L lenses come with. The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM Lens, with its lens hood reversed, fits snugly (length-wise) in a Lowepro Lens Case 4S, snugly width-wise

"The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 USM L IS is the latest addition to Canon's tele zoom lens lineup making it, by far, the most extensive system in this segment. Canon offers no less than SIX (!) ~300mm zoom lenses which makes you wonder whether their marketing folks went nuts altogether. :-) Just to give you an
