  • Fast, quiet AF for pin-sharp results

  • A portable, versatile lens with STM for photographers travelling with their EOS.

Extremely compact and portable design

Never be without your EOS. The compact pancake EF 40mm f/2.8 STM is very thin, so you’ll always be able to take your DSLR with you.

Smooth and quiet AF, STM focussing for moviesFast, accurate autofocusing ensures pin-sharp images even in tough conditions. Movie Servo AF with STM uses stepping-motor technology for smooth, quiet autofocus when filming on compatible Canon DSLRs.

Useful low light shooting

An f/2.8–22 aperture range provides control over depth of field, giving you the freedom to restrict or extend focus as required. A fast maximum aperture allows hand-held shooting in low light without using flash.

Great image quality designed for travel versatilityA versatile 40mm focal length is great for travel. Tackle everything from portraits to landscape and street photography. Great image quality right across the frame, thanks to an aspherical lens design and Super Spectra coatings.

Reviews

"This Canon EF EOS 40mm f/2.8 STM works perfectly with every Canon EOS camera ever made, meaning every Canon DSLR and every Canon autofocus 35mm camera made since 1987. Of course it works great on today's 5D Mark III and Canon 7D, but it also works great on my original 1987 Canon EOS 650! The only oddness I noted on my 1987 EOS 650 is that while auto and manual focus and depth-of-field preview and everything work great, manual focus override doesn't work: you have to set the lens to manual first. Manual-focus override works flawlessly on my 35mm EOS Rebel G from 1996 and EOS 3 from 1998, so I'm not worrying about it."

The Canon 40mm STM pancake lens is perhaps, no, DEFINITIVELY, the sharpest lens south of the $/€/£ 200 line Canon has ever produced. It consistently scores very high on both full frame and cropped cameras, and mounted on a Dslr it looks almost as diminutive as the Olympus body cap lens on a micro 4/3 body, but with excellent optics. CSR tested this little gem mounted on a Canon 1Dx:

"The combination of a very compact and lightweight Canon 40 mm STM lens on a large, heavy professional camera may

"As previously mentioned, the EF 40mm f/2.8 has a new type of AF motor for Canon, it is quite similar to what you would find in a mirrorless camera system. That being said I did find it to be a touch slower than my other canon lenses which have the USM motor inside, however the the slight lack of speed does not mean the lens is any less accurate. I did have to perform a microadustment of the lens with my 5DmkII but once done it has been spot on at all times. The lens does

'STM' is the keyword here, and it stands for 'Step Technology Motor'. These are the first such lenses in Canon's line-up, and are optimized for video shooting. Their performance, speed wise is a step (no pun intended) below those equipped with USM.
