Overview

Description by Canon:

Lens Discontinued ( replaced by EF 35mm f/2 IS USM )

On full-frame cameras, the compact EF 35mm f/2.0 offers a wide angle of view and a very natural perspective, making it a good alternative standard lens to a traditional 50mm optic.

  • Wide 63° angle of view
  • AFD focusing system
  • Compact and light weight
  • 25cm close focusing distance
  • 52mm filter size
  • Super Spectra coatings reduce ghosting and flare

An alternative standard prime lens for photographers who prefer a wider view of the world.

Versatile design
A minimum focusing distance of just 25cm enables photographers to get closer to their subjects while retaining a more natural, wide-angle perspective. The lens' fast aperture means depth of field can be restricted for blurred backgrounds and photographers can shoot hand-held even when light levels fall.

Fully Electronic Lens Mount
An integrated AF motor provides fast autofocusing performance. The lens' electromagnetic diaphragm ensures incredibly accurate control over aperture positioning.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Reviews

"This said, the Canon 35mm f/2 is among the sharpest wide lenses I've tested, just like the 35mm f/1.4 L (1998-) and new 35mm f/2 IS (2012-). The only differences between these and the 24-70/2.8 L II is if you're looking in the far corners on full-frame, in which case, this original 35/2 is slightly less sharp than the others wide-open, but the same stopped down, and the same throughout 95% of the rest of the image that matters.

This 35/2 is extraordinarily sharp and contrasty, even at f/2. Throughout 95% of the image, there is no difference between f/2 and stopped down, as seen on a 22MP 5D Mark III at the test range at infinity. As one stops down to f/8, the

"Looking at the average (mean) for center, average, and corners shows a bit more about the lenses. The old 35mm f/2 does quite well in the center and mid-lens areas, but it’s pretty awful in the corners. The new 35mm f/2 IS and the classic 35mm f/1.4 L do much better in the corners, with the 35 L (stopped down to f/2) clearly better than the new f/2 IS. But the Sigma does better than any of them.

"In the Chromatic Aberration comparisons, the Canon f/2 actually outperforms (albeit only slightly) both the Canon f/1.4 and Sigma f/1.4 lenses. The latter two had very similar CA results.

The Light Fall-off comparisons for the Canon f/2 to the Canon f/1.4L and Sigma f1.4 EX are on the whole

"Released back in 2007 the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 USM L is the successor of the legendary EF 50mm f/1.0 USM L - the fastest mass production SLR lens ever ... and one of the most expensive around. Surprisingly Canon decided to give up two thirds of an f-stop (f/1.0 - f/1.1 - f/1.2 - f/1.4 in case you wonder) but the good news about this is the substantially lower price tag of around 1400 €/US$ so the

"At similar apertures, the Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 Lens is similarly sharp in the center to my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM Lens at 35mm. However, the 24-70 L was much sharper in the corners even on a 1.6x FOVCF body.

At similar apertures, the Canon EF 35mm f/2.0 Lens was clearly sharper than my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Lens at 35mm. The
