Overview

Description by Canon:

The ultimate in fast aperture wide-angle lenses. UD and aspherical elements eliminate distortion and aberrations for stunning results. A f/1.4 maximum aperture allows hand-held shooting in low light.

Features

  • Wide 84° angle of view
  • Fast f/1.4 aperture
  • Aspherical and UD lens elements
  • Subwavelength structure coating
  • USM focus motor with full-time manual focus
  • Floating internal focus mechanism
  • Weather and dust seals
  • Robust build quality

A high quality, fast-aperture wide-angle prime lens.

Fast aperture prime lens
The EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM has a large maximum aperture of f/1.4, making hand-held shooting possible in low light. Such large apertures can be used to restrict depth of field, even at such short focal lengths. Circular diaphragm blades result in smooth out-of-focus regions (bokeh).

Aspherical and UD elements
For optimum visual performance, the lens incorporates two types of special elements: aspherical elements to correct spherical aberrations, and Super UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements to eliminate secondary chromatic aberrations. The result is crisp, high contrast and undistorted image quality all the way across the frame.

Subwavelength structure lens coating
Canon’s patented lens element coating minimises the ghosting and flare caused by internal reflections within a lens and helps the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM to deliver crisp, clear images.

Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

L-series quality
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.

Lead-free optics
Environmentally friendly, lead-free glass is used throughout the construction of the EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM

Reviews

"Weighing 650g, this lens isn't a lightweight option, although it isn't exactly heavy either and it balances extremely well on the EOS 5D MkII used for testing. At 93.5mm long and 86.9mm in diameter it actually feels quite chunky.

The build is typical of Canon's L series lenses, and the lens feels very robust. It is also sealed against dust and moisture and the lens mount is finished with a slim rubber gasket to prevent ingress of water into

"Canon takes pride in offering the biggest variety of ultra-large aperture lenses in the (DSLR-)industry starting at EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L all the way up to the EF 200mm f/2 USM L IS. The EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L was probably the "worst" of these lenses and 13 years after its initial release the update is finally here - the ... guess what ... Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 USM L II.

"The Canon EF 24mm ƒ/1.4L II USM was introduced in the lead-up to Photokina 2008, as an update to its pre-existing 24mm ƒ/1.4. Introduced in December 1997, the previous version of the 24mm ƒ/1.4 was probably getting a little bit long in the tooth, despite having all the fixtures and trimmings of an L-class

"Obvious by now is that the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM Lens is a weather sealed lens. Not so obvious is that this lens requires a filter for full sealing (like all other Canon non-Super Telephoto sealed lenses).

Auto focus, driven by Ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor), is fast, quiet and accurate (mostly) - even in low light conditions. I say "mostly"
