Overview

Description by Canon:

Advanced three-stop Image Stabilizer (IS) technology makes the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM an ideal telephoto zoom for shooting in dim light and at slow shutter speeds without incurring camera shake.

  • Powerful magnification, yet affordable
  • Three-stop Image Stabilizer
  • UD lens element and Super Spectra coatings
  • Circular aperture provides pleasing background blur
  • Fast, quiet autofocus

An affordable telephoto zoom with Image Stabilizer.

Affordable high magnification
The powerful, yet reasonably priced, EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM will appeal to nature and sports photographers looking to achieve sharper images when shooting handheld. When fitted to an EOS camera containing an APS-C sized sensor, the lens gives an angle of view roughly equivalent to a 112-480mm lens on a full-frame DSLR.

Image Stabilizer
The EF 70-300mm f/5-5.6 IS USM features a three-stop Image Stabilizer (IS), making this an ideal lens for handheld work. Shutter speeds up to three stops slower than would be otherwise possible can be used with no perceptible increase in image blur. When panning horizontally, the IS system can be set to correct only for unwanted vertical shake, and the system switches off when the camera is mounted on a tripod.

UD lens element
A UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass lens element corrects for chromatic aberrations and provides high resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range. Only environmentally friendly lead-free glass is used in the lens construction.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Pleasing background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm, which is controlled electromagnetically, gives out-of-focus regions a softer, more even feel, and lets in-focus subjects stand out against a blurred background.

Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Reviews

"On a sub-frame body (we tested it on an EOS-20D), it delivers excellent sharpness from corner to corner, across most of its focal length range. It softens slightly at 300mm and f/5.6, but stopping down to f/8 returns it to excellent sharpness. Softness due to diffraction limiting begins at about f/11 though, so its

"The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 USM IS is one of the older IS lenses available today. It replaced the old EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 USM IS which was the first Canon IS lens to hit the market back in 1995. It is an immensely popular lens especially among APS-C users but it is a native full format lens so for the sake of

"Slow focusing was one of the downfalls of the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM Lens. Canon states that autofocus has been improved in the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens. But, Ring USM (Ultrasonic Motor) is not part of the package. Improvements in the CPU and AF routines help in the focus performance increase according to Canon. Accuracy is often more important than speed.
