Overview

Description by Canon:

Lens Discontinued

The professional photographer's telezoom lens.

The EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM is a professionally quality, fast-aperture telephoto zoom lens popular with wildlife and sports photographers, as well as those shooting weddings and portraiture.

Benefits

  • High performance, L-series telephoto zoom lens
  • Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture
  • Four UD lens elements
  • 1.5m minimum focussing
  • Water and dust resistant
  • Eight-bladed aperture
  • Ring-type USM AF motor

A zoom as good as a prime lens

One of the finest telephoto zoom lenses in the EF line, optically comparable to a prime lens. Four UD-glass elements to correct chromatic aberrations and multiple zoom groups allow internal focusing, resulting in high image quality throughout the zoom range. Compatible with Extender EF 1.4x and 2x.

Fast, constant maximum aperture
Shooting in low-light conditions is possible thanks to the lens' fast maximum aperture of f/2.8, which stays constant throughout the zoom range. Such an aperture also gives control over depth of field.

L-series quality
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.

Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Accessories
A lens hood and a soft case are included.

Reviews

"The Canon 70-200mm ƒ/2.8L USM is impressively sharp, one of the sharpest zoom lenses we've tested in the 70-200mm range. This is made even more impressive by the fact that the lens design is approaching fifteen years old, designed well before the advent of the digital SLR camera.

"In certain aspects Canon users are certainly among the lucky ones - they can e.g. enjoy the luxury of being able to choose between no less than 4 different 70-200mm versions. In the center of interest are certainly the highly popular EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM L IS II and the EF 70-200mm f/4 USM L IS. The non-

"Weighing 1310g, this lens is a little lighter than the image stabilised equivalent, but without sacrificing build quality. High quality materials have been used throughout but the lens lacks a rubber gasket around the lens mount, which is a feature often found on more modern lens designs to keep out dust and moisture.

The lens balances well on the EOS 5D MkII used for testing with the centre of gravity being just a little

"The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM Lens has the smallest maximum magnification value among its siblings - .16x at 4.9' (1.5m) vs. .21x at 4.6' (1.4m) for the IS, .26x at 3.9' (1.2m) for the f/4 and .21x at 3.94' (1.2 m) for the f/4 IS. A 25mm extension tube will significantly help the 70-200 non-IS' closeup capabilities (.41x) while a 12 mm extension tube will help only very minimally (.22x).
