Overview

Description by Canon:

The compact and lightweight EF 50mm f/1.8 II standard lens delivers image quality that belies its price

  • Standard 46° angle of view
  • Fast f/1.8 aperture
  • 45cm closest focusing distance
  • 52mm filter size
  • Super Spectra coatings reduce ghosting and flare

An affordable, high quality standard lens with a fast maximum aperture.

Compact and high-performance, standard lens
This is the lightest EF lens in the range, weighing a mere 130g. Its Gaussian optics provide sharp images at all focusing distances as well as excellent colour balance and contrast.

Fully Electronic Lens Mount
As part of the acclaimed EF lens family, the EF 50mm f/1.8 II features a built in AF motor to provide fast, direct AF performance. The lens also includes an electromagnetic diaphragm, which ensures the right mechanical aperture position is achieved every time.

Smooth background blur
A virtually circular aperture diaphragm gives out of focus regions a softer, more uniform feel. Sharp foreground objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Reviews

"The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is the very cheapest lens in the Canon line-up. In the APS-C DSLR scope the field-of-view resembles a 80mm lens here which qualifies it as an interesting portrait lens besides other purposes such as low-light photography.

"Autofocus is driven by a micro motor. Focus speed is not stellar, but fine in good light with subjects that are not moving too quickly. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens is one of Canon's louder/buzzier lenses - you know when it is focusing. But this is not a wildlife lens - and the noise probably won't bother most people. I suppose a positive aspect of the sound is that you know when it is working - and when

"This lens is one of 6 different 50mm lenses that we did a shootout with. Senior tech Jim Tanner wrote up the test results for each lens on a comparative basis, with charts and graphs showing how each lens did compared to the others in the test. The graphs for this don't fit our usual layout well, so we've assembled

"Weighing only 130g, this lens is very lightweight and will probably go unnoticed stowed away in a kit bag ready for when a fast aperture prime is required. The lens barrel is constructed almost entirely from lightweight black plastic, which feels brittle and probably won't cope with much abuse. The lens mount is also made of plastic, which probably saves as much in construction costs as it does weight.

"The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is the most affordable lens in the Canon EF line-up. Its optical design has not been changed since the dawn of the EOS system but Canon simplified the construction from the mk I lens in the early 90s. Classic "fifties" are popular when it comes e.g. to low-light, shallow depth-of-field and street photography.

"The Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II is the least expensive lens currently available for the EOS system, and has been in the lineup since late 1990. It's a simplified version of the original EF 50mm F1.8 of 1987 (often referred to as the 'Mark I') which was supplied as standard with some of Canon's earliest 35mm EOS SLRs; however it can trace its lineage back a lot further than that, as the company has been
