Standard lens with perfect macro capability

Multi purpose macro
Lightweight and compact macro lens for close-ups up to 0.5x (half life size). The optical system uses a floating construction for performance at all focusing distances. With a large f/2.5 aperture, beautiful background blur is possible. This multi-purpose lens is ideal for portraiture and other applications besides macro photography.

Large f/2.5 aperture
A maximum aperture of f/2.5 allows for fast, flash-free shooting in low light settings, plus excellent depth of field control.

Fully Electronic Lens Mount
As part of the acclaimed EF lens family, this lens features a built in AF motor to provide fast direct AF performance. The lens also includes an Electromagnetic diaphragm (EMD) which enables incredibly accurate aperture control, ensuring your chosen aperture remains accurate and constant every time.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings help ensure accurate colour balance and high contrast, whilst also suppressing flare and ghosting by absorbing light that might be reflected off internal lens elements and digital EOS sensors.

Reviews

"The Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 macro was introduced back in december 1987 so it's one of the oldest lenses in the line-up and it seems as if Canon has discontinued the lens with the recent introduction of the new EF-S 60mm f/2.8 USM (w/reduced image circle). Within the scope of this test we've used an EOS 350D so

"In addition to macro application use, the Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro Lens can be used as a normal 50mm lens. Compared to Canon's other 50mm lenses, the 50 macro is slightly longer/narrower/lighter than the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens, and both are larger/heavier/have better bokeh quality than the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens. The Canon EF 50mm f/2.5 Macro Lens has a 6-blade

"Weighing only 280g, this lens is relatively compact and lightweight. Despite the light weight, the build quality is excellent, with much of the barrel being constructed from high grade plastics and the lens mount from metal and it balances well on the Canon EOS 5D Mark II used for testing.

Focusing isn't particularly fast, as is common with macro lenses, but it does hunt back and forth quite a lot
