Compact lightweight super-telephoto
This high-performance lens was designed with portability and ease of handling in mind. The EF 400mm f/5.6L USM features a UD (ultra dispersive) element and one super-UD element, whose characteristics are similar to fluorite. This combination results in sharp pictures from corner-to corner. The lens also has a built-in hood and a detachable tripod mount.

L-series quality
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.

Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Reviews

"Due to the lack of an IS correction group the optical design can follow a minimalistic approach with just 7 elements in 6 groups including one S-UD and one UD element. Well, Einstein once said "Keep things as simple as possible but not simpler" which is probably also a good idea in lens land - e.g. Leica lenses are

"The Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM Lens is relatively light in weight but very solidly built. It feels long and narrow in your hand - and feels even lighter than it is. This feel is most similar to the Canon EF 300mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens. The built-in slide-out lens hood is very convenient.

A member of the Canon L Lens Series, the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM Lens' overall optical and mechanical performance are

"For whatever reason the manufacturers are only offering few "affordable" tele prime lenses today. The Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 USM L is the last of its species (slow speed 400mm) that it marketed today - there used to be a Pentax FA* 400mm f/5.6 and a Minolta AF 400mm f/4.5 APO but these are history already. Seems as if the zoom lenses in this range killed the prime market. The Canon lens survived without changes since 1993. It earned a mixed reputation in the 90s because of a rather mediocre test report in an US magazine. However, it showed no major issues in our old APS-C format test so let's have a look how it performs within its native full format scope.

"The 400mm ƒ/5.6L USM produces sharp results - not tack-sharp, but certainly very good. Interpreting the results on our blur graphs is fairly easy and straightforward. On the 20D, images are evenly sharp at all apertures with the exception of ƒ/32 where it becomes just slightly uneven. Results are essentially
