Overview

Description by Canon:

Portable and affordable, the EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM is an ideal all-purpose wide-angle lens for full frame cameras, and a high-quality, compact standard lens on DSLRs with APS-C sized sensors.

Features

  • 28mm wide-angle lens (45mm equivalent on APS-C sized sensors).
  • Fast f/2.8 maximum aperture.
  • Up to four-stop Image Stabilizer.
  • Ultrasonic autofocus mechanism.
  • Circular aperture for soft background blur.
  • Super Spectra coatings reduce flare.

A compact, affordable wide-angle lens that’s useful in a variety of situations.

High-quality wide-angle lens
A 28mm wide-angle prime lens offering an 75° angle of view on full-frame DSLRs. On EOS cameras with APS-C sized sensors it makes a great standard lens, offering the equivalent view to a 45mm lens on a full-frame camera.

Shoot in low-light conditions
A maximum aperture of f/2.8 permits hand-held photography in available light without the use of flash. Image stabilisation allows shutter speeds up to four stops slower than normal to be used without the risk of camera shake.

Fast, quiet autofocus
Canon’s ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, near-silent focusing. Full-time manual-focus override permits fine adjustment without changing focus modes.

Close focusing
Get as near to your subject as 0.23m, and enjoy a dramatic wide-angle perspective.

Space- saving design
Weighing just 260g and measuring 68.4mm x 51.5mm in size, the EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM is a lens you can take everywhere. Great for travel, landscape and documentary photography.

Designed for great image quality
A seven-bladed circular aperture provides beautiful bokeh, while Super Spectra coatings reduce flare. The EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM classic prime-lens design minimises distortion and aberrations, which can degrade image quality.

Reviews

"Among Canon’s own lenses the EF 28mm f2.8 IS USM can hold its head high, it performs very well, so is it worth looking further afield too? Carl Zeiss also produces a 28mm lens in Canon fit, their Distagon f2 ZE. Without image stabilization or auto focus this is a lens that needs to perform significantly better to justify costing twice as much: It doesn’t, it actually matches the Canon virtually point for point, it’s only benefit apparently being its wider aperture. However Canon’s image

Gil De Sousa tests this lens in conjunction with a 5D Mark III camera body

"The EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM is a compact and well-built prime lens with a common wide-angle focal length, a good maximum aperture and a modern image stabilizer that compensates up to 4 f-stops. While the image stabilizer sounds great one has to consider that it's not as necessary in wide-angle lenses as it is in telephoto lenses - but I still appreciate it. The lens is best used indoors or for architecture and landscape photography. When using the lens with an APS-C camera the resulting effective focal length of 45 mm is close to a standard / normal lens and thus can be used for a whole variety of things.

Gary Wolstenholme reviews the lens with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II Dslr body:

At £700, this lens could be considered quite expensive for a prime lens with an f/2.8 maximum aperture, even with silent focusing and image stabilisation. Canon's other 28mm lens costs around £380 and sports a faster f/1.8 maximum aperture, but no image stabilisationThird party offerings at the same focal length include Sigma's 28mm f/1.8 EX DG. Although this lens lack silent focusing and image stabilisation, it does have a faster maximum aperture and can be picked up for around £360Those with a taste for the exotc, and deep pockets to match, may also consider the Zeiss ZE Distagon 28mm f/2 T* lens. This lens has a fast f/2 maximum aperture, but lacks autofocus, image stabilisation and any electronic coupling with the camera. Even though it is quite
