Overview

Description by Canon:

LENS DISCONTINUED (replaced by Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM )

A compact, affordable wide-angle lens that's useful in a host of different situations.

  • Wide 75° angle of view
  • AFD focussing system
  • Compact and light weight
  • 30cm close-focusing distance
  • 52mm filter size
  • Super Spectra coatings reduce ghosting and flare

Prime standard lens for APS-C sensor cameras
Weighing in at just 185g, this is a lens you can take wherever you go. On EOS DSLRs with APS-C sized sensors it makes a great standard lens, offering the same field of view as a 45mm lens on a full frame DSLR.

Fast maximum aperture and aspherical design
A large maximum aperture of f/2.8 allows hand-held, flash-free shooting even when light levels get low, and lets photographers control depth of field effectively. A high-precision aspherical lens element minimizes distortion and other aberrations, producing sharp images with high contrast.

Fully Electronic Lens Mount
An integrated AF motor provides fast autofocusing performance. The lens' electromagnetic diaphragm ensures incredibly accurate control over aperture positioning.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Reviews

"The Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 completes the local tests of the classic Canon wide angle fix-focals. The lens was first released in 1987 so it is as old as the EOS system itself. On APS-C DSLRs the field-of-view is equivalent to 45mm so it can almost be considered as a standard lens here.

"The Canon 28mm f/2.8 illustrates this nicely. Despite selling for well under $200, it delivers excellent sharpness wide open and lower distortion than all but the most expensive zooms. On a sub-frame DSLR like the Canon EOS-20D, it's impressive sharp even wide open, and only gets sharper as you stop it

down, finally softening slightly from diffraction limiting as you progress past f/8.

"Canon's other current 28mm prime, the Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Lens, is the most logical comparison lens. Even though smaller and less expensive, the Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 Lens nearly keeps up with the f/1.8 in sharpness. The f/1.8 obviously has wider apertures available, but even stopped down to f/2.8, the f/1.8 is not much sharper than the f/2.8 lens. The 28mm f/1.8 is sharper in the
