Overview

Description by Canon:

With its wide angle of view and extended depth of field, the EF 20mm f/2.8 is a great choice for photographers shooting landscapes, architecture or reportage. A lens that can be used almost anywhere.

  • Ultra-wide-angle lens with angle of view of 94°
  • USM focus motor with full-time manual focus override
  • 25cm closest focusing distance
  • Super Spectra coatings

A versatile lens that delivers superb wide-angle images in any scenario.

Dynamic wide angle design
By offering a field of view of 94˚, the EF 20mm f/2.8 USM is able to take in the complete field of human vision, and much more. A great lens for the landscape or documentary photographer. Distortion is highly corrected, for a natural perspective when shooting architecture and interiors.

Fast maximum aperture
A maximum aperture of f/2.8 allows flash-free, hand-held shooting in low-light conditions when using a tripod is impractical.

Aspherical and UD elements
For optimum visual performance, the lens incorporates aspherical elements, to correct spherical aberrations, and Super UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements to eliminate chromatic aberrations. The result is crisp, high-contrast undistorted image quality all the way across the frame.

Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings help ensure accurate colour balance and high contrast. They also suppress flare and ghosting by absorbing light that would otherwise be reflected off internal lens elements and the camera's digital sensor.

Reviews

"The Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM was released back in 1992 and it's one of the older designs in the current lens lineup. On APS-C DSLRs the field-of-view is equivalent to 32mm so it looses its ultra-wide character towards a moderate wide-angle lens here.

"As with all of Canon’s prime lenses, the build quality is commendable. The construction ( from the users point of view) is simple with the only control being the AF/MF switch situated to the left of the distance window just forward of the mount. This window is marked in both metres and feet and includes a very usable depth-of-field scale. Forward of this is the manual focus ring, and at 18mm wide there is

"Image sharpness provided by the Canon 20mm ƒ/2.8 when used at its widest aperture (ƒ/2.8) is somewhat soft, a fairly ''lumpy'' profile between 3 and 5 blur units. However, stopped down to just ƒ/4, overall sharpness improves dramatically. At ƒ/4, we note excellent central sharpness (just over 1 blur unit) and very slightly soft corners (around 2 blur units). Stopped down further, there's only marginal improvement at ƒ/5.6, the optimal aperture. At ƒ/8 and smaller, diffraction limiting is already setting in, but it isn't until ƒ/16 that we note any real reduction in
