Overview

Description by Canon:

LENS DISCONTINUED ( replaced by Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM )

The high performance ultra wide angle zoom lens

Developed to succeed the high-performance EF 17-35mm f/2.8L USM, the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM has the leading wide-angle zoom range in its class. In response to increased demand for ultra-wide zoom lenses for 35mm SLR cameras, and digital SLR Camera's that tend to have a smaller frame size when compared to the 35mm, Canon has developed the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM. This is the first Canon EF lens to incorporate three types of aspherical elements (ground, replicated and Gmo [glass molded]) to effectively correct the aberrations that occur during zooming. And despite its longer zoom range the EF16-35mm f/2.8L USM delivers the highest image quality in its class.

The EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM has two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements, which effectively correct the chromatic aberrations prone to occur in wide-angle lenses. As a result, colour fringing along the edges of the subject is virtually eliminated and both image resolution and contrast are exceptionally high. The inner focusing and ring type USM (Ultrasonic motor) ensures both silent and high-speed AF operation.

Reviews

"The optical design is made of 14 elements in 10 groups with three aspherical elements (ground & polished, replica and glass-molded) plus two UD element. The lens features 7 circular aperture blades. At 84x103mm and 600g it almost feels compact regarding the large max. aperture. A floating system is meant

"Launched back in spring 2007 the EF 16-35mm f/2.8 USM L II is the latest ultra-wide zoom lens made by Canon. Regarding its rather steep pricing of around 1400€/US$ it's primarily targeting the professional market segment. Compared to its predecessor Canon claims to have "improved the peripheral image quality at the wide-angle end". Certainly an interesting aspect regarding the rather

"The Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM is an update to a classic ultrawide lens. If you're reading this review, you probably already know what you're looking for - a versatile wide-angle zoom lens with a constant wide aperture, built tough as nails. The II version of this lens has only a few refinements on the

"I'm very pleased with the image quality I'm getting from this lens. Wide open results are very sharp in the center and improve only slightly stopped down. Wide angle full frame corners, though not perfect, are very good for a lens this wide - the best full-frame Canon wide angle zoom lens yet.

"The Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM Lens ships with a Canon EW-83E lens hood and a Canon LP1319 soft lens pouch. The shape of the hood (very wide and very short) makes one question whether it actually helps. It does almost nothing for lens protection - and probably nothing for 1.6x body image quality. It also makes storage inefficient. With the hood removed, the 16-35 easily fits in a

"This is one of Canon's famous "L" series lenses, but we found its performance at maximum aperture a little wanting. Depending on the focal length, it ended up somewhat soft when shot wide open, either in the corners, or on one side or the other. In a lesser lens, the degree of softness here would probably pass with little comment, but at a street price north of (US$)1400, we think photographers have a right to expect better
