Overview

Description by Canon:

The EF 135mm f/2 L USM is a fast, lightweight, high-quality telephoto lens. It is the ideal tool for capturing indoor sports in low-light conditions and for shooting portrait photography.

  • Large f/2 aperture
  • Fast, quiet autofocus
  • Super Spectra coatings
  • L-series construction and optics
  • Circular aperture for soft bokeh
  • Integration with E-TTL II flash system
  • Soft case and lens hood

A wide aperture, fast-focussing professional telephoto lens.

Sharp, fast and lightweight
The lens' large maximum aperture lets photographers shoot with relatively fast shutter speeds, even in low light. This makes the EF 135mm f/2.0L USM an ideal optic for those shooting indoor sports. Despite its high specification, the lens is relatively lightweight and compact, weighing just 750g.

L-series quality
The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, representing the best in precision-designed EF optics. L-series lenses combine superior performance with superlative handling, and are resistant to dust and moisture.

Large f/2 apertureA large maximum aperture of f/2 provides outstanding speed for shooting in low-light conditions without the need for flash. The large aperture also provides fine control over depth of field.

Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings ensure accurate colour balance and enhance contrast. They also reduce flare and ghosting – a common problem caused by light bouncing off a camera's sensor.

Integration with E-TTL II flash metering
The lens passes distance information back to a compatible EOS camera's E-TTL II flash system to ensure optimal flash metering.

Reviews

"16 years on from its launch the 135mm f/2L USM is still a solid option for portrait, sport and low-light photography. That said as lens development continues to evolve recent telephoto primes like the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM and Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM do demonstrate notable improvements in Sharpness. Although performing well in all our DxOMark Lens Metric Scores the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM only ranks 5th for EF mount telephoto primes on the EOS 5D Mark II and new in terms of quality to price ratio the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM is noticeably sharper and a

"The optical design of the lens is made of 10 elements in 8 groups including two UD elements. The min. focus distance is 0.9m resulting in a max. object magnification of ~1:5. The aperture mechanism features 8 aperture blades. With a size of 83x112mm it's fairly compact but due to the big glass elements required

"The Canon EF 135mm f/2 L USM is one of the medium tele lenses in the Canon lineup and a member of Canon's prestigious "L" (Luxury) class. A few years ago we performed a test in the APS-C scope already and it turned out to be a superb performer here so it's naturally interesting to check its qualities on a high resolution full format body as well now.

"Vignetting is strong at f/2 on a full-frame body, but images quickly smooth out when the lens is stopped down. Distortion is very well controlled with only slight pincushion distortion. Color and contrast are very nice.

An f/2.0 aperture is extremely wide (fast) for this focal length. This the second longest focal length Canon EF lens currently

"As with all of Canons L series lenses, this one is built for professional use and will stand a fair bit of miss handling. The simple design of the prime lens helps with the single focus ring and a pair of small switches for AF/MF and focus limit being the only moving parts on the lens, a standard distance window, with a basic depth-of-field scale being the only other accoutrement.

The focus limit switch restricts focusing to 1.6m to infinity from the full 0.9m to infinity and cuts down the

"As the reader reviews below testify, this is an absolutely stellar lens, probably one of the sharpest and most distortion-free that Canon makes. It starts out very sharp at f/2.0, gets even sharper at f/2.8, and softens only slightly at f/11. At f/32, it's pretty soft, but less so than a lot of lenses at that aperture.
