  • Life size image reproduction (1:1)
  • UD lens element
  • Focus distance limiter
  • 8 blade circular aperture for beautiful creative blur effects
  • 58mm filter size
  • Ring type USM AF motor
  • Optional tripod collar

A perfect portrait lens of the highest quality with additional macro capability.

Macro with extended reach
The EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro USM is a medium telephoto lens with a macro feature providing a 1.0x magnification. With eight aperture blades, creative background blur is possible to help make the subject stand out. The lens features a focusing limiter switch which limits the focus range to improve AF speed.

Ring USM auto focus with manual override
Canon’s ring USM auto focus system employs ultrasonic frequency vibrations for fast, accurate and virtually silent operation. Full-time manual focus override, via a large ring that does not rotate during auto focus, allows photographers to fine-tune focusing instantly.

Super Spectra coating
Super Spectra coatings help ensure accurate colour balance and high contrast, and suppress flare and ghosting by absorbing light that might be reflected off internal lens elements and image sensor.

Reviews

"The lens has been completely redesigned into a true IF (internal focus) construction that does not extend when focusing to macro distances. This is highly unusual for a 100mm macro lens. The front element does not rotate so using a polarizer is not problem. Typical for ring-type USM lenses full-time manual override is

"The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM L IS macro is the 6th macro lens in the Canon EF lens lineup. The lens does not replace the highly popular EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro but is meant as a higher quality option featuring Canon's proven lens-based IS (Image Stabilizer). Just like most IS lenses the design complexity increased quite a bit from only 12 elements in 8 groups in the "conventional" macro lens

"Utilizing USM (Ultrasonic Motor), the Canon 100 Macro internally focuses very fast, quietly and very accurately. I've been questioned on the fast AF statement several times since writing this review. I've rechecked my lens and, though it takes a little time to go from 1:1 macro to infinity, it focuses very fast at normal focusing distances. The second person to question this exchanged their lens for another

"Mounted on the Canon 20D, the lens is very sharp, even wide open at ƒ/2.8. At this aperture setting there is a generous sweet spot of sharpness, showing at less than 1.5 blur units, with corners approaching but not reaching 2 blur units. Stopping down only improves these results, reaching absolute

"The red stripe that is prominently placed around the front of the lens barrel isn't just for show. The lens feels impeccably put together with a nice wide rubber focusing ring placed two thirds along the length of the barrel. The lens balances well on the EOS 50D used for testing.

Manual focusing is a pleasure, even when in AF mode, as it offers full-time manual focus, which is great

"Recently we had a look at the fancy new Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM L IS macro but Canon has actually two medium tele macro lenses in their lineup. The "older" Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro was introduced back in march 2000 so it's not really an outdated lens by prime lens life-cycle standards. The primary application of the lens is, obviously, macro photography but it's certainly also fine

"What isn't new is the old standard Canon side-pinch-only lens cap. Canon really needs to update this design to the center-and-side-pinch caps used by most competitors. The long, narrow installed hood (included) makes it very difficult for me to access the lens cap. Adjusting a circular polarizer inside the hood is nearly impossible as your hand completely blocks the light. On the other hand (and
