Super zoom
The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM is an L-series super telephoto zoom lens, equipped with an Image Stabilizer. Its fluorite and Super UD-glass elements largely eliminate distortions and aberrations. A floating optical system also ensures good picture quality at all focal lengths. The lens is compatible with Extender EF 1.4x II and Extender EF 2x II.

Image Stabilization
The EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM features a three stop Image Stabilizer (IS), making this an ideal lens for handheld work. Shutter speeds up to three stops slower than normal can be used with no perceptible increase in image blur. Major movement in a particular direction is automatically interpreted as panning and IS is turned off in this plane.

Ultrasonic focusing
A ring-type ultrasonic motor drives autofocus extremely quickly, and in near silence. Excellent holding torque ensures the point of focus is reached accurately, without overshooting. Furthermore, full-time manual override is available, making it possible to adjust focus without leaving AF mode.

Precision optics for high image quality
High contrast, low distortion and good corner-to-corner resolution is evident throughout the zoom range. A virtually circular aperture diaphragm, which is controlled electromagnetically, gives out-of-focus regions a softer, more even feel, and lets in-focus subjects stand out against a blurred background.

Reviews

"The 100-400mm is quite sharp, however, it is not consistently sharp between focal lengths and apertures. Its best results are seen at either 100-135mm and ƒ/8, or 300mm and ƒ/11; some slight corner softness is introduced at 200mm, and 400mm is generally slightly less sharp across the whole frame. At ƒ/8-ƒ/11,

"This lens is one of the ‘big white’ lenses from the Canon range but is almost unique in that it retains the old ‘one touch zoom’ mechanism that was popular in the late 70’s and early 80’s. This means that you can push/pull the front part of the barrel to change the focal length at the same time as turning it to adjust the focus manually. Unfortunately, this mechanism has been blamed in part, by digital snappers,

"The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 USM L IS is a fairly old design dating back to the late 90s. I still remember those days when I used it on an EOS 1n ... with film if you remember those good 'ol days. Well, time goes by but it's still here - despite all the rumors that it's gonna be discontinued soon and those
