A Canon’s patent Ultra Sonic lens Motor system allows rapid silent focusing without the use of gears. The motor is mounted directly inside the lens ( instead of Nikon’s system were the motor is mounted inside the cameras body).Nikon’s answer is the Silent Wave system, AF-S.
